Hayseed Dixie
21st September 2007

Once again, the legendary Hayseed Dixie sold out the Brook and the crowd was scattered with fans dressed in checked shirts, dungarees and cowboy hats in their honour!

The bluegrass rockers lived up to their reputation as one of the best live acts around with another brilliant performance. Not many people can get away with greeting a crowd in Southampton with the words “Hello Portsmouth..” but singer/guitarist and all-round comedian Barley Scotch was just cheered all the more for it!

Lively and entertaining from start to finish, the extremely talented band blasted their way through a whole plethora of classic tunes such as ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’, ‘Breaking the Law’, ‘Ace of Spades’, ‘Holidays in the Sun’, ‘I don’t feel like dancing’, ‘Holidays in the Sun’, ‘Fat Bottomed girls’ and ‘Down Down’ in their own unique and brilliant way.

They also threw in a few of their own songs for good measure; ‘The Rider Song’ is a hilarious look at the excessive backstage demands made by certain popular bands when on tour and the emotional(!) ‘Poop in a Jar’ has become a live favourite.

They saved the best till last though with a fantastic version of ‘Duelling Banjo’s, which had the whole crowd dancing.

Neck - Everyday is St Patrick’s Day!
21st September 2007

Self proclaimed ‘Psycho-Ceilidh’ folk punks ‘Neck’ provided a storming support set for Hayseed Dixie. Their infectious songs infuse the energy, passion and spirit of the Clash with the melodic genius of The Pogues and they were a huge hit with the large fervent audience.

Playing a mix of traditional standards such as The Star of the County Down and McAlpines Fusiliers and their own material of which the likes of ‘Everybody’s Welcome to the Hooley’ (a UK top 100 hit last year) and ‘Everyday is St Patrick’s Day’ are already classics in their own right. Highlight of the set was a phenomenal version of the Sex Pistols ‘Anarchy in the UK’ which is set to appear on their forthcoming album.

This is a band that is destined for great things and it surely won’t be too long until the band returns to the Brook as a headlining act!!

Two superb bands, plenty of laughs and drink…all in all, a great nights entertainment at the Brook.

The Bog Rolling Stones
11/08/07

Introducing new guitarist Mick Wailer, singer Mick Slacker lamented “Brian went swimming the other night…he should have used armbands!

Wonderfully named Brook regulars ‘The Bog Rolling Stones’ brilliantly re-created the Stones experience in their own unique style tonight.

It’s all very tongue in cheek but they have mastered the rock legends mannerisms and sound to perfection creating a more than viable alternative to the real thing.

The first half concentrated on early era material as the band ripped through classics such as ‘Under my thumb’, ‘19th Nervous Breakdown’ the fantastic ‘Ruby Tuesday’ and ‘Mothers Little Helper’. With a superb cover of Bob Dylans ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ thrown in for good measure.
As ever, the band were a huge hit with the audience and the endearing Slacker kept everyone amused with witty anecdotes throughout.
The second part showcased the Stones Heyday with a further stream of hits including ‘Honkey

Tonk Women’, ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll’ ‘Wild Horses’ and ‘Satisfaction’. The band closed proceedings with an ironic cover of Primal Screams brilliant Stones-esque party anthem ‘Rocks’.

The Bogs were on great form tonight and well and truly cemented their status as one of the Brooks favourite bands.

We look forward to having them back soon.e

Whole Lotta Led
21st July 2007

One member of the audience tonight remarked that ‘they have a good look’ …and this is a tribute band that doesn’t actually make a conscious effort to look like the act they portray which is something of a rarity. Whole Lotta Led like to let the music tell the story.

The Jimmy Page approved act has been treading the boards for 11 years now and have built up a formidable reputation as one of the best Led Zeppelin tributes around.

Tonight at the Brook they cemented their reputation even further with a blistering and lengthy set which included classics such as ‘Black Dog’ , ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and of course the sublime ‘Stairway to heaven’ to name but a few. Special mentions should also go to the enchanting Joni Mitchell inspired ‘Going to California’ and also the encore combination of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Communication Breakdown’.

Exuding confidence, vocalist Lee has mastered Robert Plant’s vocal style and range perfectly and the talented musicianship was both energetic and captivating.
After a truly brilliant show, the enthusiastic crowd went home more than satisfied.
Another member of the audience summed up the mood of the crowd perfectly when she stated “they are easily the best Led Zeppelin tribute I have ever seen”.

Carry on with The Queens!
                    ...Freddie May Roger Deacon!

27th July 2007

David Bowie didn’t turn up …..”I’ll hit him with my handbag if he lets me down again” moaned ‘Freddie’ before launching into an upbeat version of ‘Under Pressure’ with his trusty comrades.

Flamboyant, lively and endearing, Queens managed to produce ‘A Kind of Magic’ tonight and a packed out crowd of ‘Good old Fashioned Lover Boys and ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ loved every minute of it. With an endless stream of hits ranging from early standards such as ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘ Tie your mother down’ to later gems such as ‘I want it all’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and ‘One Vision’, the audience sang along to every song.

Other highlights included a storming version of ‘We will Rock You’ (the Queen Live Killers version) and the brilliant ‘Crazy Little thing called Love’… Oh and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ went down pretty well too!!

The band were very tight… musically!... and Freddie kept everyone amused with his showmanship, camp anecdotes and costume changes… reaching all the high notes, he proved that he has a big set of lungs on him too!

During the encore Freddie even donned a leather mini skirt and got his ‘hoover’ out for ‘I want to break free’, parading it around for all to see! Queen were known for their timeless songs and extravagant showmanship… Queens more than replicated that tonight.

After an energetic and entertaining performance…the audience went home satisfied!!
